Capsule wardrobe

How to Create a Maternity Capsule Wardrobe

Pregnancy is a journey (quite literally). There are so many phases that we as women go through. The sleepiness nights, the sore bones, the thirst that can never be quenched and that's only 4% of the challenges our bodies experience.

When thinking about how our pregnancy impacts us externally, I automatically think of elements that contribute to our comfort during this major transition. One of which is how we dress.

Our clothes play a huge part in building confidence and are often used as an expression of our creativity, style and personality. When our bodies change during pregnancy, what we once knew our style to be at times goes out of the window and this then creates a sense of confusion and the feeling of loosing control of the confidence we once had.

Creating a capsule wardrobe can help to minimise this and instead allow us to truly embrace our beautiful bodies during this amazing journey.

What is a capsule wardrobe

Now if you're anything like me, you may be thinking " Ok I need this in my life, it sounds amazing, but, what is a capsule wardrobe?".

A capsule wardrobe is a small selection of clothing pieces that are interchangeable and complement each other.  Having a selection of clothing like this helps to make getting ready a much smoother and easier process.

So lets get straight too it. We're grabbing control by the horns!

The basics

The basics would consist of your everyday essentials.  This will include your T-shirts, whether long sleeve or short sleeve. A pair of Maternity Jeans, Maternity Leggings and some knit wear for A/W.

Try to get basic colours in these such as grey, black, creams or whites. This will help to ensure that they can match easily with anything in your wardrobe, therefore creating more outfit options (Winning)

Now we have the basics, we want to look at items that we can use for layering.  This could include dresses, Gilets, Dungarees, Blazers and cardigans. Having items like this is a great for experimenting with your style and staying on trend without breaking the bank.

We often forget about this. I can shamefully hold my hands up for this.  I used to only concentrate on the things people see but what about what we see. Does everything we see or wear make us feel good?

When I was pregnant it was extremely important to have underwear that was comfortable and supportive. Items such as a maternity bra. As your body changes, you’ll need a bra that provides the right amount of support you need. The main elements on my list when it came to a bra were the following -

  • Adjustable straps

  • Wider bands for a comfortable fit

  • Bras that were great for post pregnancy to get the most wear

Over the bump or under bump briefs are also important and are great for making you feel comfortable as your body grows.

Building a capsule wardrobe takes time and doesn't have to be achieved overnight.

Take the pressure off and make it a fun activity for yourself. Something that will truly make you appreciate this process of motherhood even more.
